Sewing for Travel – Lap Top Sleeve

Now that summer is here I have been thinking of travel.  Specifically, I have been thinking of things I will need to make my travels go more smoothly.  This is one of those items.  I have wanted to make a travel case for my computer for a while and I finally got around to making it.  I found this tutorial.  What stood out to me about this tutorial was the shirred fabric embellishment.  It went together fairly quickly.

The zipper application was straight forward and went much more smoothly than I expected.  I cut the fabric for the shirring smaller than the pattern called for and so it doesn’t have the same look as the pattern.  The other bad thing is that I forgot to take note of pattern on the outside fabric.  I should have centered the pattern more when I cut out the fabric.  I was just in a hurry to get started and didn’t think about this at all.

I used fleece for the inside.  This will keep my computer nice and cozy while it travels.  I used another bit of vintage trim from my stash and it seemed to go with the fabric really well.

Now my laptop is all set for travel!

  1. I think it is great that you worked in some materials you already had and I’m impressed that you used a zipper too. That seems like it would be hard to sew. I tell you, I don’t think it’s possible to have too many cases or bags to hold stuff, so keep it up! Maybe I’ll have to buy one from you soon. : )

  2. Love it! absolutely beautifully VINTAGE Mary Claire but you lost me at “shirring”! Please don’t get offend because I am a beginner – can’t sew a straight line yet…..I am not use the sewing term yet.

    • No problem! The shirring is the off- white colored material in between the two rows of trim. it’s basically a couple of rows of gathering- that’s all. :)
